"The writer and philanthropist Mary Louisa Armitt founded this independent museum and library in 1909 as a way of honouring and safeguarding the town’s intellectual streak. The institution grew from the Ambleside Book Society, established in 1828. The museum has exhibits for Beatrix Potter, who donated personal copies of her books, paintings and her natural history watercolours, some of which reveal enlightening details about her life story."

"Not strictly a restaurant, however this bar serves great food and also a solid selection of local ales on draft. During the week it is a lovely quiet place to bring the dog and enjoy some decent food, however at later on a Friday or Saturday night it can get a bit loud if you are hoping for a quiet meal. Service is always friendly, and they do a great value early bird menu."

"You get some good fish and chips, can’t ask for much more especially when the staff was so helpful (my husband couldn’t make up his mind so went with the staffs choice). I would say however that the curry source was the worst I’ve ever tasted, I’m not from around here, so maybe that’s just how they like it in Cumbria (watery) not sure. Either way it didn’t ruin the meal or experience."
